Josh Tongue claimed the fourth five-wicket haul of his Nottinghamshire career as the Green and Golds wrestled with Warwickshire for control of their Rothesay County Championship clash on day one at Trent Bridge.
Tongue returned figures of 5/91 from 22 overs to counteract the efforts of Ed Barnard, who ended unbeaten on 134, while Brett Hutton collected a further two scalps and Lyndon James one.
Tongue’s two morning wickets swung the opening session in Nottinghamshire’s favour, but it was Hutton who struck first, seeing Alex Davies caught for one by Ben Slater at backward point off a leading edge in the third over of the day.
Dan Mousley and Rob Yates put on a stand of 62 in reply, but their efforts were curtailed by Tongue, who removed both in consecutive overs.
Yates, who received a rapid yorker from Tongue’s first ball of the match, had no answer to a delivery that climbed and took the edge to give Liam Patterson-White at first slip an easy catch.
He departed for 18, while Mousley, having made a run-a-ball 49, was caught off a leading edge 14 balls later, this time at extra cover by captain Haseeb Hameed.
Warwickshire then suffered another blow two balls after lunch as Sam Hain was pinned leg before by Lyndon James for 16, leaving Warwickshire four down and still yet to pass three figures.
Test-capped Australian Beau Webster then became a third victim for Tongue at the start of the England man’s second spell, chopping a loose drive into his leg stump for 25.
Barnard did complete his first half-century of the season but lost another partner as Hutton induced another leading edge to see off Zen Malik, caught at point for four.
The visiting captain, now with former England all-rounder Chris Woakes for company, resisted for 30 overs either side of tea, but Tongue returned to break the stand as the latter also diverted the ball into his own stumps while on 64.
Barnard went on to complete his century off 121 balls, but there was late joy for the hosts as Tongue, now with new ball in hand, once again celebrated a haul of five in a Nottinghamshire shirt.
With 12 overs of the day remaining, he registered Jordan Thompson as his fifth wicket via a sharp catch at second slip, pouched by England colleague Ben Duckett, to ensure Warwickshire ended the day eight down.
