Nottinghamshire were forced to fight hard on a testing second day of their Rothesay County Championship contest against Sussex in Hove.
Brett Hutton and Olly Stone returned two wickets apiece, with Tom Giles and Liam Patterson-White adding a further one each.
However, the hosts advanced to 308-6 at stumps thanks to three half-centurions, putting them 68 in front of the Green and Golds at the halfway point.
