Sol Budinger struck his maiden List A fifty but Notts Outlaws saw a Royal London Cup encounter with Yorkshire Vikings washed out at York Cricket Club.

The visitors reached 185 for five in the 33 overs of play that were possible after being inserted, with Budinger and Ben Slater both passing 70 in an opening stand of 146 from 140 balls.

That partnership was punctuated by a 75-minute rain delay, and in bowler-friendly conditions, the Outlaws lost five for 19, before an unbeaten 20 from Matt Montgomery steadied the ship prior to the arrival of more rain.

There were hopes of a restart as the weather improved, but the damage was done by the regular precipitation, and the match was called off shortly after 5:00pm.

Although the toss took place as planned, with home skipper Gary Ballance opting to bowl first, the passing showers throughout the warm-ups were a sign of things to come.

The first delay of the game arrived fewer than five overs after the start, with the Outlaws forced to suspend a swashbuckling start of 25 without loss that had seen Slater amass 23 runs from the first 24 balls he faced.

That continued following the restart, as Slater and Budinger made hay in what was now a 41-over game, first passing fifty in the ninth over, and advancing to three figures via a Budinger maximum in the 17th.

Both reached their individual half-centuries within minutes of one another, but in very different fashion; Slater nurdled a single through point while Budinger smashed six down the ground.

Such was the fluency with which the pair were batting, passing 150 as the home attack toiled, that the 199 that formed Nottinghamshire’s record opening stand against Yorkshire in List A cricket seemed under threat.

However, it was Mat Pillans who finally snared a wicket for the hosts in the 24th over, seeing Budinger sky a catch to Harry Duke behind the stumps for 71.

Pillans very much then became Notts’ scourge, taking three more wickets in his following 14 balls as he removed Slater, Peter Trego, and Lyndon James to oversee a slip from 146 without loss to 158 for four.

Slater was first, caught by Ben Coad at long leg, before Trego feathered behind to Duke for one, and James was caught by Fraine at square leg.

Liam Patterson-White was then pinned in front by his fellow spinner Jack Sullivan, before Montgomery and Dane Schadendorf restored some stability.

Having overcome their hiccup, the Outlaws looked well set to complete their 41-over innings with an imposing total, but as so often in the English summer, it was rain that had the final word.
