Lyndon James, Steven Mullaney and Joe Clarke all clocked up half-centuries to repel Essex on the opening day at the Cloudfm County Ground after Nottinghamshire had been reduced to 48 for three having won the toss.
The partnership between James and Mullaney lasted the entirety of the afternoon session and added 117 for the fourth wicket before Clarke returned from a blow to the forearm to cement Notts' position in the game - 248 for six at the close.
