Warwickshire concluded the second day on top at Trent Bridge after a spell of new ball bowling put the hosts under pressure in the LV = Insurance County Championsjip.

The visitors finished their first innings 571/9 from 135 overs before declaring shortly before tea, with Calvin Harrison collecting four wickets, and Jake Ball three.

The four-pronged Bears seam attack then prised five Nottinghamshire wickets before the conclusion, with play abruptly ended by lightning and rain, with the Green and Golds trailing by 489.

Nottinghamshire's ambition to claim early scalps was realised in the departure of Danny Briggs, with Ball claiming the return catch to reduce Warwickshire to 382/6.

Failure to stunt partnerships proved Notts' achilies heel on the first day, however, and so it transpired again, with another 60 added before Ed Barnard's sweep was beaten by Harrison, and a further 80 for the eighth wicket - including three sixes and five fours in Hassan Ali's half century - before he became the leg spinner's third victim, holing out to Matt Montgomery at deep mid-wicket.

His fourth was that of Chris Rushworth, albeit not before he had made 20 in a fledgling cameo with Micheal Burgess, who finished unbeaten on 77 when the visitors declared.

Haseeb Hameed and Ben Slater made a steady reply and, despite an early scare for the former who was bowled off an Ali no ball, added 50 for the first wicket.

The demise of Slater sparked a succession of wickets for the addition of two runs, however, with the left-hander edging Barnard to slip, Hameed caught behind of Ali, and Joe Clarke bowled by the same bowler.

Lyndon James and Steven Mullaney attempted to steady the ship, but the latter planting two sixes into the Fox Road stand to dampen Rushworth's impressive figures precded the demise of James, caught behind to give Oliver Hannon-Dalby his first.

The wind picked up and grey clouds rolled in as Tom Moores emerged from the pavilion to partner his captain, before lightning began to prevent any further play with 22 overs still scheduled.
