Nottinghamshire produced a dominant display with bat and ball to secure their second-largest victory by runs in County Championship history and consolidate their position at the top of Division One.

Jack Haynes’ second century of the summer and Liam Patterson-White’s career-best 135 helped the hosts to a 481-run lead at the end of their second innings.

And after Brett Hutton’s mastery of the moving ball accounted for both Hampshire openers, Lyndon James secured a second career First-Class five-fer to consign the south coast side to defeat inside three days.

That Nottinghamshire were able to produce such a victory charge was testament to the work of Haynes and Patterson-White on the second evening.

The pair came together with Notts 84/6 and holding a slender advantage over their opponents; by the time they parted, the Green and Golds’ second-innings score had rattled along to 322.

Nottinghamshire’s largest partnership of the season so far was built on patience and sound judgement, before Haynes and Patterson-White found the freedom to move through the gears as the morning progressed.

If there was an element of comedy as Hampshire’s fielders searched for the ball in the fenced-off seating in front of the Pavilion – a delivery from Brad Wheal having sailed for four wides – the joke was wearing thin as morning became afternoon and Notts found the fence with regularity.

Patterson-White was first to up the tempo, beating his teammate to three figures by hoicking Sonny Baker into the Acrisure Stand.

It was the homegrown all-rounder’s first ton on the Trent Bridge turf, and the emotion in his celebratory bat-raise and hug with Haynes was plain to see.

Two overs later, Haynes turned Baker into the leg-side to bring up his own milestone, his patience on the second day richly rewarded.

Notts scored 144 runs without losing a wicket in the morning session, and they continued to bat themselves into an impregnable position in the afternoon, Patterson-White ultimately the last to fall.

Any chase of 482 to win always appeared fanciful, and as Hutton found a modicum of movement to trap Fletcha Middleton and induce Mark Stoneman into edging behind, Hampshire were on the ropes inside 11 overs.

Tom Prest’s ill-judged cut off James succeeded only in finding the gloves of Kyle Verreynne, before captain Ben Brown tamely holed out to square leg off Hutton.

Two balls later, a lapse in concentration from Nick Gubbins saw him depart for 12, raising the spectre of a three-day finish for the first time.

And Notts were in no mood to let up. A short ball from Hutton was hooked into the hands of Mohammad Abbas by Liam Dawson, before James Fuller flicked James to square leg, where Patterson-White took a smart catch.

Three balls later, Toby Albert was brilliantly pouched off James by Jack Haynes, the centurion diving low to his left at third slip to cue pandemonium amongst the home fielders.

James brought up his five-fer by seeing off Brad Wheal for a four-ball duck, and ten overs of last-wicket resistance were broken by Patterson-White as Baker miscued to Farhan Ahmed.

It was Nottinghamshire’s first win over Hampshire in any format since May 2018 – a win which saw them ascend to the top of the County Championship table.

With over a third of the campaign completed, they occupy that spot once again, and head to Durham buoyed by extending their unbeaten start to the summer.
