Olly Stone claimed 3/18 from ten overs before hitting a crucial unbeaten 18 as Nottinghamshire 2nd XI sealed a second nail-biting derby win inside four days with a one-wicket triumph over Leicestershire in a 50-over clash at Lady Bay.

Chasing 191 to win, the hosts were on course at 143-5 from 27 overs, only for left-arm off-spinner Ali Farooq to claim 3/26 as they slipped to 171-9 seven overs later.

However, Stone hit a run-a-ball unbeaten 18 and added the vital final 20 runs with last man James Hayes, who made an equally invaluable seven not out to see the Outlaws home.

It came just 72 hours, and on the same ground, after the Second XI had downed Derbyshire by one run in a three-day fixture on Friday.

The target had been set after Stone had led the attack in returning his sparkling figures, while Joe Pocklington, Benny Howell, and Farhan Ahmed all claimed two wickets apiece.

Captain Freddie McCann snared a run-out, that of Sheridon Gumbs for 12, as regular wickets frequently stunted the visitors’ progress.

Jamie Dunk hit 70 for the visiting Foxes, and Gumbs’ fellow opener Sol Budinger made 44, but they were the only knocks of note as Farooq’s 13 was the next highest score.

Ben Martindale, who struck 53 off 54, and Freddie McCann initially started things off smoothly, putting on 78 for the first wicket inside the first 11 overs.

Even when Martindale, who hit eight fours and a six during his innings, departed, the hosts were stood at a healthy 110-3 in the 18th over.

The bowling of Farooq and fellow spinners Ollie Rayner and Liam Trevaskis applied some pressure, though, as cameos from Sam Seecharan, Howell, and Pocklington were cut short.

Once Tom Giles became the ninth man out, it was down to Stone and Hayes, who efficiently ticked off the runs and traded boundaries.

Hayes levelled the scores at the beginning of the 38th over, and then, with just one to win, Stone launched Trevaskis down the ground for an almighty six to see the hosts snatch victory.
