Scoring

There are a number of skills required to become a scorer in cricket and we’re here to help you get to grips with all of them from the very basics, to advanced techniques.

We deliver a range of courses which will enable you to become accustomed to the requirements to fulfil the role, and develop through the scoring pathway.

Available Courses

Introductory course

The aim of this course is to provide you with the basic skills and knowledge to record a cricket match. It won’t teach you everything you need to know, but it will give you the tools and confidence to get started.

Topics covered include: completing a scoring record, recognising umpire's signals and standard scoring symbols.

Basic Scoring

This free entry level course is designed to provide you with all the skills needed to start scoring. You don’t need any prior knowledge of scoring to participate.

The course covers the basics of scoring a game of cricket such as scoring symbols, umpire signals and dismissals, as well as providing a helpful overview of the Laws of the Game.

Club Scorer

Club Scorer is the course for anyone wanting to score on a regular basis, providing a one stop shop to comprehensively teach you how to score. This course is suitable for complete beginners and existing scorers who want to improve their skills. On completion of the course, you’ll receive an ECB Association of Cricket Officials (ACO) Club Scorer certificate.

ECB ACO Level 1 – Scoring the Game

Level 1 is open to any member of ECB ACO who has previously completed the Club Scorer course. Not a taught course, this award is attained by scoring a minimum of 10 matches and collecting colleague feedback for your scoring portfolio. When you’re ready, bring your portfolio for professional discussion with an ECB ACO scoring assessor. Successful candidates will be issued with an ECB ACO Level 1 Scorer’s Certificate.

ECB ACO Level 2 – Planning and Preparation

This one-day course is targeted to ECB ACO members who are already accredited Level 1 scorers and are thinking about scoring matches for multiple clubs, in new and longer formats of the game. It doesn’t contain any more details on how to score, but focuses on the planning and preparation required when scoring away from your own club and some of the additional duties that a scorer could perform.

Achieving SL2 accreditation:

Having attended this one day course, scorers will need to score a minimum of 10 matches, putting into practice the topics covered on the course. They will need to build a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate this and, when ready, apply for professional discussion and assessment, the cost of which has been incorporated into the SL2 course fee.
